“Dynamic” use of add_root is currently broken. See this reply for more information and workaround:

I don’t think this has anything to do with the callbacks. Rather, add_root does not currently work for “dynamic” (i.e. after init) usage. Best current WAR is to add a top-level layout like a column once up front and modify it’s children to add or remove “roots”
