Having line/events initially hidden

We have various figures, e.g. graphs with multiple lines, timelines with multiple types of events drawn as rectangles.

In both cases we have a legend with a hide policy so when the checkbox in the legend for a line or event type is clicked that line or event type is hidden.

Is there a way to have some lines or event types initially hidden so the user has to click the checkbox in the legend to show them?

@quite68 glyph renderers (the thing returned by p.circle(...) etc,) have a visible property and a muted property. Does setting that to r.visible=False or r.muted=True not do what you are looking for?
