A few months ago I was inspired by the philosopher Peter Godfrey-Smith (Signal, Detection, Action) to think more about the improbable existence of structure in nature. Most people who took STEM undergrad classes were exposed to the “curse of dimensionality” at some point, but the topic didn’t really strike me until I spent more time thinking about sensing and cognition.
I put together a basic application to explore the concept of dimensionality using Bokeh to convey some aspect of the vanishingly small corner of state space occupied by identifiable patterns.
